Flutist Shanna Gutiérrez presents an imaginative recital which explores the intricate and aged relationship between breath, voice, movement, and language. Each work is rooted in a specific text, which is then used musically through song or spoken word or as a vehicle for deriving other expressive sounds. Featuring five world premieres, in addition to Stockhausen’s FREIA, the music incorporates vocal text(ure)s, electronics, and choreography in some surprising new ways.

7:30pm VOICES recital
Light Recital Hall
There has always been a close association between the human voice and flute. Where a beautifully-toned singing voice and narrative speech have the been the classic examples, music of the 20th- and 21st-centuries has created a different type of closeness of the flute and human voice incorporating sounds of breathing, vocal text(ure)s, and singing into music for a wealth of colors. The works presented in VOICES all reflect one or more of these aspects and are performed seamlessly in two parts utilizing lighting and movement for a more cohesive experience. Works include: Laconsime de l'aile (Kaija Saariaho), Atem-Lied (Toshio Hosokawa), Rekindle (Michel van der Aa), Trembling Air (Benjamin Broening), Alpha Waves (Malin Bang), Voice (Toru Takemitsu), Zungenspitzentanz (Karlheinz Stockhausen).
