"Education is not the filling of a pail, but rather the lighting of a fire."
--William Butler Yeats
Shanna Gutierrez maintains a teaching studio of students of all ages and levels in privately in Evanston or at Vernon Hills High School in addition to Suzuki lessons at the Music Institute of Chicago. Online lessons and scholarships are also available, see below. The core of her teaching style comes from the great Marcel Moyse who emphasized time, patience and intelligent work. She believes that every student deserves an individualized approach, and strives to bring each student to new heights. Her goal is that students progress as a musician and a person developing skills they can take with them for a lifetime.
Here's more about those skills for a lifetime....
Beginner/Intermediate Lessons: Beginner lessons are 30 minutes; Intermediate lessons are 45 minutes. Students will learn the fundamentals of flute playing. Curriculum includes building of a strong foundation of tone exercises, a method book, technical work when appropriate, solo flute repertoire, and duets. Online lessons are available.
Advanced Lessons: Advanced lessons are 60 minutes. Students will continue to build a strong foundation of flute playing with the edition of etudes, solos, band audition music and participation in the Solo and Ensemble Festival. Shanna's students have held top chairs in the Midwest Young Artists Orchestras, IMEA and IMEA-Allstate bands and orchestras, Milwaukee Youth Orchestras, and numerous local high school bands/orchestras. Additionally her students have won top prizes in competitions for the Chicago Flute Club, Midwest Young Artist, Society of American Musicians, and Chicago Youth Symphony. Online lessons are available.
College Preparatory Lessons: Collge Prepartory lessons are 60-90 minutes and require a high level of commitment and both in work ethic and time. Shanna regularly prepares students who want to major in music for college auditions. Students will learn the discipline and artistry needed to embark on a future in music. Her students have gone on to study at Univeristy of Illinois School of Music, Toronto University School of Music, The Juilliard School, Indiana University, and Illinois Wesleyan, among others. Online lessons are available.
Online Lessons: Online lessons offer great flexibility in scheudling and great possibility to reach beyond teachers in your local area. There is less driving time involved and less distractions to the environment. Online lessons happen via Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or Zoom. Becasue nothing can substitute for in-person experience with a teacher, it is my policy to see my weekly online students at least 1-2 times per year. Contact me for more details.
Contemporary Flute: Shanna specializes in providing expert contemporary flute and coachings on repertoire and the extended techniques. These are available both in person and online.
Adult Lessons: Whether students are coming to the flute for the first time as adults or want to return to active playing after a long break, Shanna works regularly with adults helping them to grow their skills and reap enjoyment out of music making regardless of age. Her oldest student to date was 76 years young.
Scholarships: I believe all students who wish to learn should have access to high-quality instruction. Please fill out the form to request scholarship assistance here.
